Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
